New Feature: Digital Scrapbooking

January 25, 2010

For those who are unaware I would like to take a moment to talk about my latest business venture. I am offering my time and creative genius to create a personalized digital scrapbook for you. I’m sure you might have a couple of questions for me so I will attempt to read your mind and answer those questions below.

What is digital scrapbooking?
Scrapbooking is the process of taking photos and putting them into a book along with memorabilia and journaling. Traditional scrapbooking usually requires lots and lots of time to do this because there are lots of embellishments, paper, photos, etc that have to be physically glued down to the pages. Digital scrapbooking streamlines this process by using digital photos and digital embellishments and putting them in scrapbooking software to create a photo book. Plus because there are no bulky papers, embellishments and photos to be glued onto the pages the book can be incredibly thin and easy to carry around.

Why would I want a digital scrapbook?
With the sheer volume of digital cameras being used these days we can assume everyone is taking a lot of pictures. But what is being done with all these photos? Are they being printed and framed? Put into a cheap photo album that was purchased at Walgreens? Are they still sitting on your computer, or even worse, are they still on your camera? Why even take photos? Think about having these photos displayed beautifully in a photo book on your coffee table so that when people visit you they can pick up your scrapbook and see these images and read the stories behind them.

Why is scrapbooking so important?
Three words: Preserving Your Memories. Let’s face it, we will one day forget what our lives were like today. Your kids may not remember the things you all did together as a family when they were very young. You may not remember the time you ran your first 5K or your parents’ 50th anniversary party. When you have a scrapbook with the photos of these special moments along with your own words retelling the stories behind each image you will always be able to look back and be reminded of all those memories.
What are the prices of your books and what sizes are available?
I have created this PDF that shows how I price my books and what sizes I offer. Click here to see it.

How do I get started?
Send me the photos you would like to have in your book. You can do this by mailing them or even delivering them to me if you live close by. If you would like journaling in your book, put together a Word document of your story and I will put it in your book for you. Once I have finished creating your book I will email you a PDF proof so you can approve the final book. Once you have approved your book I will ship it directly to your door step.

If you are interested in getting a digital scrapbook and would like to see examples of my work and pricing information please visit my Digital Scrapbooking page.

Picture of the Week 12-29-09

December 29, 2009

Today I took our dog Pearl out for a hike in nearby Peters Canyon. Here in California we are having beautifully clear days even though it’s supposed to be winter outside. I got this weeks picture as I was walking back to the car. There’s something about wooden fences that I love. I also love HDR, especially fake HDR, which is what this image is. To clarify, fake HDR, is when you make an HDR image out of one single photograph instead of three different images. It may be cheating but at least I don’t have to use a tripod to make sure the three images align correctly.

As I was walking my dog around the Tustin Sports Park I noticed a few of the trees which inspired this week’s photo. Although fall is almost over there were still a few trees that still retained their brilliant autumn colors. I chose to shoot in the late afternoon which provided me with very warm light. I also tried to do auto exposure bracketing on all my shots but it was actually very windy when I was photographing. The photo below is an HDR image and as you can see the trees in the background didn’t line up perfectly when I put the images through Photomatix. I still love how the oranges, yellows and reds blend together and it reminds me that my favorite season of the year is coming to a close.

For more non-HDR shots of the fall foliage check out the GALLERY.

Pearl

December 4, 2009

I haven’t posted anything recently for a couple reasons, one is that we haven’t been taking many pictures lately and the other is a bit more unfortunate. About three weeks ago we lost our family dog. She had gone from seemingly perfect health to her death bed in a matter of a week. Mimi wasn’t even really our dog, but she had been living with us for about 4 months. Despite her short time with us her loss was very hard to take. Before Mimi, Bryan and I had never owned a dog, we were fish people. Mimi was a ray of sunshine in our life and after her passing we realized that we could never go back to being just fish people, we were dog people. As a way to distract myself from the constant pain of thinking about Mimi, I browsed around the internet for dogs. I came across a site that rescues German Shepherds and that’s where I found her. Pearl, that is, a white German Shepherd. We recently adopted this beautiful dog and she has been amazing. I didn’t bond with Pearl the way I bonded with Mimi at first, but then again Mimi set the bar pretty high. Pearl has got her own weird personality with all the random quirks that you grow to love. Nonetheless she is our own perfect gem.

Picture of the Week 10-26-2009

October 26, 2009

This week’s picture is yet another HDR image done in Photomatix. I shot this with a rented Canon 50D in Mission Hills during the Trail of Torment. While I was waiting at the finish line for the runners I noticed the beautiful foliage around me and the perfect golden lighting that the early morning sunrise was providing. I thought  it would make for a perfect HDR image. The great thing about the 50D is it’s ability to shoot in high speed continious mode. Because I almost never use a tripod my HDR shots usually don’t line up right when I put them into Photomatix because I always shoot hand held. With the 50D in high speed continious this was not a problem, the burst was so fast it was like the wind didn’t have any time to rustle through the leaves.
